RedHatChangeLocale

How to change the locale under Red Hat

Changing the locale under Red Hat is simple and painless, simply edit the /etc/sysconfig/i18n file and place the desired locale in it.

For instance change the file:

LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"

Into the following file:

LANG="fr_FR@euro"
SUPPORTED="fr_FR.UTF-8:fr_FR:fr"
SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"

In order to go from US English into French with Euro character.

Please note that this is the SYSTEM locale. If you'd like to change a single user locale, use the following in the ~/.bash_profile of the user:

export LANG="fr_FR@euro"

That's all there is to it! See the Solaris page for a much harder example of locale change... :-)
