Solaris is a lot of things, but "simple" is not one of them. Fast is also something that does not go well with Slowlaris.

However, once you get past the first hurdles, Solaris is stable, solid and quite logical. Well, if you don't take into account the fact that it has the annoying tendency to save multiple copies of a binary in different directories...

Apart from the free UNIXes, such as Linux and the *BSDs, Solaris is probably one of the best supported UNIX on the Internet. A lot of web sites offer information on it, and it is quite well documented. If, like me, you own an old SPARC-based SUN workstation, Solaris 10 can be downloaded for free from the Internet, allowing you to test it and enjoy its stability.

You will find below some general information on Solaris, as well as my notes on both Solaris 8 and Solaris 10. I hope these helps, but please remember that you will probably need to adapt them to your needs!

General Information

Here are a lot of useful links for Solaris :

Notes on Solaris 8 and Solaris 10

Again, please remember these are quick notes. While they may be useful, before applying them blindly to your machine/problem, try to understand why something works, or don't work, and do read the man pages! Also, whenever these notes give you a device name, a user name, a program name, etc., you should always double-check to make sure this applies to your machines/sites.

In other words: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. The author won't accept any responsibility for damages that you inflict on your poor machines because you were too lazy to make sure this actually works on your machine...
